Glomstenen, eller Glumstenen som den också kallas, är ett så kallat flyttblock. Flyttblock (erratiska block) är stora stenblock som blivit flyttade med hjälp av is, exempelvis inlandsisar eller glaciärer. Man anser att de flest flyttblocken i Sverige idag har blivit transporterade under den senaste istiden. Flyttblocken fastnar på och i inlandsisar och glaciärer och förflyttas i isens rörelseriktning. Då isen smälter hamnar flyttblocken på den underliggande markytan. Flyttblocken kan också har transporterats i flytande isberg och därför ibland finnas på platser långt ifrån det ursprungliga isområdet, vilket också innebär att flyttblock ofta är av en helt annan bergart än den omgivande miljön.

Långt innan Morups Tånges fyr stod färdig 1842 var Glomstenen ett välkänt sjömärke som varnade för de förrädiska reven utanför kusten och hjälpte sjöfarare att orientera sig på havet. Stenen nämns redan i berättelsen om kung Harald Hårdrådes örlogsfärd 1061-62 och vidare i berättelsen om kung Håkon IV Håkonsson krigståg till Halland på 1250-talet.

Glomstenen, translated to "the Glum stone", is a so called glacial erratic. Erratics are large boulders or pieces of rock that has been transported with the aid of ice, for example shelf ice or glaciers. It is assumed that most erratics in Sweden was transported during what is known as the last ice age. Erratics get stuck in or on shelf ice or glaciers and are carried with the ice as it moves. When the ice melts, the erratics are dropped on the underlying ground. Erratics can sometimes also have been carried by floating icebergs and will end up far away from their origin. This also means that erratics often are of a completely different rock type than that of the surrounding bedrock.

Long before the lighthouse on Morups Tånge was completed in 1842, Glomstenen was a well known sea mark, warning about the treacherous reefs along the coastline, and helping mariners navigate on the ocean. The rock is mentioned in the story about king Harald Hårdråde from 1061-62 and also in the story about king Håkon IV Håkonson campain against Halland in 1250.
