A small mining community about five and a half miles north of
Seven Troughs in the Seven Throughs District, Farrel was amoung the
four towns to grow up in th first decade of the twentieth century
when rich gold ores were discovered. The first discovery of riches
was made in 1863 but nothing materialized until the Seven Throughs
boom in 1907.
Farrel never figured prominently amoung its three larger sister
camps of Seven Throughs, Mazuma and Vernon. Today it is the site of
a summer cattle range camp. It is situated in Stonehouse
Canyon.
Ghosts of Humbolt Region by Dave Basso
Gold was discovered in 1906 and a rush to the area began. Within
a year, 200 people were crowded into tents. However, the veins
proved to be shallow and the town was abandoned by 1910.
Foundations and rubble remain.
