A letterbox/geocache hybrid in the Redmond Watershed Preserve. The stamp is not a trade item and must remain in the box. Oh, and the coordinates above are for the trailhead, not the cache. Read on...
My main purpose in planting this letterbox/geocache hybrid is to introduce each activity's participants to the other. I am an active participant in both and believe letterboxers and geocachers are motivated by many of the same things, including finding great locations and a pathological need to hunt for stuff hidden in the woods.

Signal the Frog is the official mascot of Groundspeak, the Seattle company that hosts geocaching.com. He recently decided to take a little hike and host a get-together in the Redmond Watershed Preserve.

From the parking lot, Signal looked for a trail that would Connect him to the large trail system to the North. After making sure he was not smoking, he took a right.

Before long, Signal was rushed by both a cougar and a bear! He hopped off to the left, leaving the menacing critters behind. Soon Signal was tired from hopping, and took a break on a nice bench.

Here he looked around, spying power lines, no fewer than five sign posts, and several trail options. After resting for a few minutes, Signal went off in search of Trillium.

As he headed up the trail, Signal admired three large stumps on the right side of the trail, and continued on. Eventually, he started up a gentle rise. Near the top, he spotted a stump under a medium sized cedar tree on the right side of the trail. He hopped around to the back side of the stump, and waits for you there.

Signal asks that you please be careful not to trample the ferns on your way to the rear of the stump.

The box: The cache/box is a full-sized, 50 caliber ammo can (don't you miss those?!). Inside, you'll find two bags. One holds the geocaching log book. The other holds the letterboxing log book, stamp and ink. If you're new to letterboxing, here's the drill: You stamp the letterbox's stamp into your personal log book, and if you have one, stamp your stamp into the letterbox's log book. Stamps are usually hand-carved (way easier than it sounds, and fun!), but you can really use just about anything, including your thumb print. (Please be sure to leave the letterbox's stamp in the box.) You can log your find here and here. If you decide you like this letterboxing stuff, there are a lot more boxes in this park.

If you don't want to follow the clues above, the waypoint for the cache location is available below.

When I was doing this one today with my daughter, A+, I didn't realize that it was a letterbox-hybrid. I was pleasantly surprised to find out when I opened the box that it was. Great hide! She made the find, but I was holding the GPSr to get us there. It was a team effort. Found a geocoin in it that had been dropped into the wrong cache, but it will be straightened out now. Left a geocoin in it's place. Stamped the LB logbook too! Thanks for the great LB-HB! (1659)

My first letterbox hybrid but my second Lightning Jeff letterbox; found another by chance last week. Also once found another letter box placed by a different hider by chance on the north side of Cougar Mt. Though my third letterbox, this is the first time I've actually had the experience of reading through the story and text to make the find. Quite a bit different then following a electronic arrow and a heck of a lot of fun!

Dropped coin and discovered the State Your Business TB since I moved it less then a month ago

If I'd had a letterbox hybrid notification set up I would have bent over backwards to be FTF on this one (or, in this case, even STF would have worked) TFT just didn't cut it this time!

Just the same, the cache sounded interesting and sounded like something that mightyzinn might like more than geocaching as he would have stuff to look for along the way. This morning decided that I would give this a spin the proper way and have no doubts that letterboxing would be be a ton of fun for mightyzinn and redegg (and me as well!)

So, super cool coin was missed, but was introduced to a whole new game, so it can't be all that bad :-)

Thanks much for introducing us to this and for a nice cache!

This was a great way to spend lunchtime on a sunny day. Even though I am often saddened when I return here and think back on all of the mountain biking I did on these trails before they banned my favorite activity from the watershed, the place is still a beautiful and enjoyable place while on feet. I located the container with no problems (I went the geocaching route, as I am a GPS aficionado) and was surprised to crack open the logbook and see no other signatures. Where was everyone today? I left the geocoin (since I already traded with Lightning Jeff years ago) and exchanged pathtags. I also put my stamp in the letterbox log. I really liked your custom stamps, by the way! Thanks for a nice outing, even with the crazy additional waypoint!
