Main Street Bridge

Built in 1910, the Main Street Bridge is the shortest of all the Los Angeles River bridges at just 280 feet.  This reinforced concrete arch bridge exhibits character-defining features of Beaux-Arts bridge design. Located on North Main Street as it crosses the Los Angeles River between Lincoln Heights and Downtown Los Angeles, the bridge rests on two vertical piers in an open spandrel arch forming three arch spans. The arches exhibit arch keystones at their center as well as denticulation on the upper portion of the piers. The deck of the bridge has a modernized concrete rail of stamped arched forms.

The bridge is the earliest of the monumental bridges built across the Los Angeles River, and one of only two dating to the first decade of the 20th century. When constructed in 1910, the Main Street Bridge was the only reinforced concrete 3-hinged bridge west of the Mississippi River.

Making the downtown pilgrmage with Flaglady for some urban caching before and after the event. Appreciated those white curbs for passenger unloading but it put the pressure on us to find caches within 5 minutes or risk the heavy the hand of the law. Overall a new experience for us. Great view of the LA River. Personally, I think they should turn this into a "legal" urban canvas since the talent is so great and could be put to better use. Thanks for the hide.

Always fun to walk around here. . . Though I must say I really liked the Workman's Comp. Doctors that were here years ago - - - no! I'm serious, I loved the guy - he was so much nicer than my doctor!!! Oh, yeah! The cache is a little scary for those of us who are afraid of heights! tftc
