I have struggled to find much
information on these old distance markers. They give the distance
in miles from the "Town House". The old Town House (Dorphuis)
is a building on Greenmarket Square that was built in 1761 and was
one of the city's first double storey buildings.. It has been
used as the seat for the Burgher (citizen) Senate, a magistrate's
court, a police station and as the City Hall until 1905 when the
next City Hall was completed. In 1916 it became the city's first
art museum and is still used to house art and as a venue for
musical performances. Here is a link : www.iziko.org.za/michaelis/ These six stones are
those that I have managed to spot between Rondebosch and Lakeside
but it seems they go all the way past Simonstown. If anyone has any
further information on these stones please let me know and I will
add it to the page and we can all learn a little more.
I have removed the Roman numerals from
the pictures of the markers to create the puzzle, otherwise
everyone could easily figure out which goes where based on the
distance from town. The photographs are otherwise untouched.
The cache can be done day or night -
the stones are all clearly visible along main road and the quieter
roads (after hours) might make it easier to complete after hours.
The final is hidden less than 20m off Main Road.
For the puzzle:
The Milestone at waypoint 1 (
S 33° 57.964' E 018° 28.026') has a value
of 8.
The Milestone at waypoint 2 (
S 33° 59.641' E 018° 28.147') has a value
of 4.
The Milestone at waypoint 3 (
S 34° 01.341' E 018° 28.037') has a value
of 3.
The Milestone at waypoint 4 (
S 34° 03.924' E 018° 27.524') has a value
of 4.
The Milestone at waypoint 5 (
S 34° 04.776' E 018° 27.362') has a
puzzle of 1.
The Milestone at waypoint 6 (
S 34° 05.523' E 018° 27.792') has a
puzzle of 2.
There should not be any need for a
clue.
