The Bear River diverted into this area by lava flows, deposited a huge delta here mostly red clay, where it entered into a vast inland sea that covered much of Utah.
Some thousands of years ago, the shoreline here suddenly dropped following an enormous discharge into the Snake River. The inland sea then gradually receded until it became what we know as today as Salt Lake. Bear River then cut through its old sediments and eroded its delta into steep sides and gullies as you will see at this site.
You can see more of this erosion and cutting away by the Bear River as you head through the Oneida Narrows just East of this site following the Bear River.
