The first-in-class "Virginia" (SSN 774) nuclear submarine is due to be commissioned in a couple of months. The 377 foot boat displaces 7800 tons, and is capable of reaching 25 knots (28 mph) submerged. Munitions include the Tomahawk cruise missile and the MK-48 torpedo. The new sub is designed for powerful dominance in both regional and open-ocean, blue water missions.
Hint: If you ever get to tour a submarine, have a seat at the Weapons Officer’s station. You can see the missile launch key control box mounted on the bulkhead wall.
