Geocache Description:

This cache is at the 2nd highest peak in Utah, Gilbert

The cache "2" is named so because Gilbert peak is number "2" in elevation of all the counties in Utah, and the firefighters at Salt Lake City Fire Station "2" hiked to the peak and placed this cache. We hiked Kings peak last year and Gilbert beckoned us. We must apologize that this cache was not well thought out. It was kind of a spur of the moment idea. The coordinates are good and the location of the cache is fine, but the contents are only in a zip lock bag that ripped while putting the items in. Also there is no log book or pencil. So anyone aspiring to reach this cache, if you could bring something to use as a cache container, a log book and pencil, it would help to keep this cache active. Our intent was good to get you out hiking and caching in an area with a terrific view. Here are some waypoints to keep you on track. We started at N 40*55.393 W 110*18.401. This is a pull out on a dirt road east of Henry's Fork campground. From there head to an open meadow called Joulious park at N 40*53.926 W 110*18.772. The next waypoint is N 40*52.651 W 110*18.976 called Deadhorse park. From there head towards the ridge. A good starting point is N 40*51.550 W 110*574. From there the ridge spirals up to the peak at N 40*49.420 W 110* 20.440. My TOPO software says this route is 8.23 miles. It took 5 hours and 15 minutes. For you peak baggers, Gilbert is the tallest peak in Summit county at 13442 feet. Kings peak just across the way, actually in Duchesne county, is 13526 feet in elevation, a scant 84 more feet. Most people would opt for Kings peak because it is "king" of elevation in Utah. The Gilbert peak hike is much easier and far less traveled. Last year at Kings peak we meet around 20 other hikers at the summit. The contents of the cache are a Salt Lake City Fire Department T-shirt and some Mole skin to aid your feet you abused to get to the top. Have a good time and be safe.
