Geocache Description:

Come and visit Oskaloosa's Freedom Rock and soon to be completed Nature Center.

The area is accessable by bicycle.  It's right off the bicycle trail or by car.  Parking is very close.  The cache is a small, 35mm film container.  It contains log only, so bring your pen.  Could be muggles in the area?

A note from the artist:

11/23/15

The second to the last Freedom Rock of the year is complete and located in the nice little college town of Oskaloosa. I again had a great group of people to work with, and needed it, because as you've noticed winter is well on its way and that doesn't bode well for outdoor mural painting. We did overcome our obstacles and I'll share with you the finished product. First off, like many places, there were so many great stories to choose from... and like I tell everyone, whatever stories I choose doesn't always mean they are the best or most important, rather, I know how I can make them fit and make sense. One of the sides is dedicated to the 1st Cav's involvement in the liberating of POWs from Manila. Known as the Battle of Manila (1945) it was a one-month battle, which was a bloodbath that devastated the entire city. It was some of the worst urban fighting in the Pacific theater, and ended almost three years of Japanese military occupation in the Philippines. The reason this story is on here is because Harold Caldwell was a member of that 1st Cav and was the owner of the land the rock is located on. The Bugler, Harry L Anderson, is who the Legion is named for in Oskaloosa. He was killed by a German sniper while he was carrying orders and mail from his commanding officer to a post in the front line in March 1918 (WWI). Theresa "Billee" Davis was Oskaloosa's first member of the WAAC or Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. The Women's Army Corps (WAC) was the women's branch of the United States Army. It was created as an auxiliary unit, the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in 1942 and converted to full status as the WAC in 1943. It was disbanded in 1978, and all units were integrated with male units. The side with all the faces was inspired as I was looking into various Veteran stories from the Mahaska area and realized how many leaders (i.e Generals/Admirals) were from the area. In all we came up with seven. Here's the list... Civil War Veterans: Maj Gen Elliott Rice and Brig Gen Samuel Rice Battle of Veracruz & World War I Veteran: Frank F. Fletcher (Frank also received the Medal of Honor and has entire class of destroyers named for him) World War I & World War II Veterans: Lt Gen Thomas Watson and Maj Gen Roscoe Woodriff World War II & Korean War Veteran: Admiral Bernard Clarey Gulf War Veteran: Brig Gen Guy Vander Linden Like with many of my murals, the American flag and eagle have graced this piece as well. Hope you enjoy this stop on the Freedom Rock Tour. Big thank you to our Veterans who are serving over Thanksgiving. I know the Sorensen family is truly thankful for all you do to preserve our freedoms.
