Sarasin II Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

wollepakchong: This cache has been muggled umpteen times and I am not keen to replace it every so often. Time permitting, I will look for another location which is quite near this place and still safe. But until then, consider this cache as not available. It will be possibly replaced by another one sooner or later.

Thank you all fellows for your nice comments. If ever you should stumble on this description, please pay a visit to the place, even without a cache it is a nice and interesting location.

Geocache Description:

The cache location is accessible from the mainland or from Phuket island by easy walking over the bridge. Some comfortable stairs are to climb, but it is a no-go for wheelchairs.

Picture loadingThe Sarasin Bridge was the first one built to connect Phuket Island to the main land (Province Phang Nga). Before the sixties you had to go by ferry to cross the 600 meter gap of the Pak Prak Strait between Bang Kwang and Chat Chai on the island. To accomodate the ever rising traffic a wider (and higher) bridge was built running parallel and the old bridge became almost unused until the highway Phang Nga-Phuket was extended to four lanes. Now there were two lanes southbound on the new bridge and northbound on the old one.

Coming to age, the structure of the Sarasin Bridge was not able to cope with the heavy traffic and a third bridge was built in the middle of the two existing ones. In August 2011 the newest one was opened to traffic and the original Sarasin Bridge was rebuilt. The middle part was taken out and replaced by a huge pavillion, set high enough for boats to pass under it. Finally boats coming from north and heading for the marinas on the east coast of Phuket land did not have to go around the south of the island.

The Sarasin Bridge serves now as a tourist destination, a sunset viewpoint, a picnic location for the locals, and as a proud location of this geocache.
