Colonel Bluster was in his usual spot in the drawing room
"entertaining the troops," as he called it. His guests were
gathered around him in wrapt attention.
"I chased the wild Glimlock half way across India, into the high
mountains and across Asia to Arabia and the red sea."
"Some say the Glimlock is no mere beast, you know, but an
intelligent creature like man."
"Well anyway, when the beast reached the red sea it dived in and
began to swim. I followed in a boat, hoping that he would tire and
I could capture or kill him at sea."
"But the beast was too strong. He evaded my every attempt to
capture or kill him and ended up swimming across to Africa, where
he evaded me again. I picked up his trail in Uganda, and he led me
on a merry chase all the way to the tip of The Cape of Good Hope.
There, with his back to a sea that was too wide for him to cross,
he fell to his knees and began to plead with me in the King's
English."
"I must say that none was more surprised than me to hear
intelligent speech come from the mouth of a beast. 'Spare me,' the
beast said, 'and I will grant you more treasure than your arms can
hold.'"
"Of course, I had to spare the poor beast. How could I kill, or
even capture a beast that led me on such a fine hunt -- a beast
that spoke to me like a man. I quickly agreed and the beast
vanished from my sight. There in his place was more gold than I
could carry."
"I packed up the gold and made my way back here to England where
I bought this fine house. I have lived here in comfort and luxury
ever since."
There was among the guests a sharp, earnest young man who
fancied himself to be a scientist and a logician. "I do believe
you're quite mad." said the young man.
"Perhaps," said the colonel. "But my madness is merely the
boasting of an old man. I fear that your madness is of a very
different sort."
"That's true," said the young man. "Guard RaIl Madness."
