Geocache Description:

THE COORDINATES ABOVE ARE NOT THE REAL LOCATION! This cache begins with a virtual offset in Sudbury and leads to a cache in or near Sudbury. The final stages are in a wooded area of town conservation land near an unused railroad right of way. The railroad is not in use, but need not be approached or crossed in any event. Bushwhacking is only required for the last 25 feet or so.

Please read the description below as the coordinates above are NOT the location of the cache! This is our second cache, and it continues some of the history of Sudbury as begun in The Concord Dozen. Quoting from "A Brief History of the Towne of Sudbury in Massachusetts": “Houses were fortified and garrisons built. These were private dwellings constructed to withstand siege and stored with firearms and ammunition. They frequently sheltered Provincial soldiers who arrived to fight in times of crisis.” The Concord Dozen perished in route to one of these garrisons during the King Philip war, trying to relieve those within surrounded by King Philip’s forces. Much more information can be found in the history book above, which is available at the Goodnow library in Sudbury. This book may be of use in finding the cache! To find the Sudbury Garrison cache you must first find the memorial stone to the garrison that my buddy told me about. The memorial is located between 1.5 and 1.9 miles southeast of the base coordinates given for this cache N42 22.993 W071 24.972. Again, nothing relevant to the cache is at these coordinates, they are a reference point only. From the memorial stone you will find two important numbers: YY - is the last two digits in the year the monument was erected. For example: 1945 would mean YY=45 And: L – is the number of letters in the word following “settlers” on the monument. For example: “the settlers ran to the garrison” would mean L=3. Now use the following equations to generate 5 digit numbers (round and drop fractions): NORTH = 26130.37 – 216.7895 * YY WEST = 25901.5 – 360.25 * L This should yield two 5 digit numbers (throw away any decimals). The coordinates of the final cache are at: N42 NORTH W071 WEST filling in the 5 digit numbers you calculated above for the decimal minutes. The final cache is on the small side. There are finders buttons (one per group please) with a specially marked button and a Starbucks gift card for the first finder. As the cache is on the small side there may be limited room for trade items. Please note: Logs that give away hints will be summarily deleted due to the nature of this cache. Parking is readily available and marked on signage at the final location. Please follow the suggested parking to avoid ranger issues. Night finds may not be wise at the final location, please use good judgement.
