Eight geocaches have been placed in Dayton Cyn by Kurious Kate and Lady Lamont. Fire in Sept 2005 ravaged this area! Some caches survived and the others have been replaced. Look for CHUMASH CAVE, ROCKY ROAD, SAVORY SAGE, SEARED SUMAC, SUPER STAPLE, AND SYCAMORE SANCTUARY. Two new ones were placed January 25, 2007 - AQUA OBSCURA AND THE MATRIACH.

There have been changes in the Dayton Canyon area the past year. The proposed development to the east, which had blocked off the lower access, has apparently stalled due to a variety of environmental problems. The property is now For Sale. We walked out the lower end of the canyon through cuts in the fence and out the road leading to Valley Circle. There was no one at security and the gate was wide open.

There is another exit from lower Dayton Canyon which heads NE up the hill and exits at Deerlick Road and Valley Circle. This could also be used as an entrance. Kurious Kate and I parked a car at VC and another one at Upper Dayton to avoid backtracking. Easy parking at N 34 14.092, W 118 39.546.

This was a clever hide. Where is it, on the high trail or the lower trail? SL, TFTC

Oh no! A T in the road. I wasn't sure which way to go at first. I started up the wrong path, then decided to take a look at a map I'd made with my latest favorite topo software. To my near astonishment, it actually showed the trail I needed to be on! Happily yet wearily I trudged on in the correct direction.
Neat road...reminds me of an old stagecoach trail I trekked about Chatsworth Park last year.

nice little stash find while walking my dogs.

watch out for the black-coloured Southern Pacific Rattlesnake, especially this time of year. one kept me separated from one of my dogs for about 5 minutes on a steep, narrow part of the trail: we didn't know it was there but it was apparently trying to move away from us as we approached when it got caught on slippery soil and slid back towards the trail as we reached it. Of course that was the moment we noticed it as it coiled, rattled and hissed, which sent me leaping about 4 feet backward and my dog 4 feet forward!

you can bet I searched the area very carefully around the cache before recovering it...

The spring rains have produced abundant wildflowers. Come to Dayton Canyon and pick up the caches that you might have missed. It will be hard to miss this one!
