How many years ago did the Quaternary begin?
What was right before the Quaternary?

In the glacial periods of the Quaternary a cold corridor extended from the Scandinavian continental ice sheet in the north and the alpine glaciers in the south.
Moraines are the typical sediments of the ice ages; in the glaciers snout these are bench gravel and loess.
The lake district in North Germany and the great lakes of the Alps remain as relicts of the great ice age.
At the end of the ice age the volcanism became noticeable again (Eifel).
This stone (and of course Chemnitz) is part of the so called "Feuersteinlinie".
The name of this line originates from the flint that couldn't be found here, but which came with the ice from the north.
The "Feuersteinlinie" marks the most southern border of the ice shield.
The course of this line is passing by North Sea, Teutoburg Forest, Harz, Central German Uplands and then from west to east following cities:
Wernigerode, Blankenburg, Friedrichsbrunn, Stolberg, Gotha, Erfurt, Jena-Lobeda, Weida, Zwickau, Bad Schandau und Oybin.

In den Kaltzeiten des Quartär erstreckt sich ein kalter Korridor zwischen dem skandinavischen Inlandeis im Norden und den alpinen Gletschern im Süden. Typische Ablagerungen der Kaltzeiten sind Moränen; im Vorland der Gletscher sind es Terrassenschotter und Löß. Als Relikte der Eiszeit verbleiben die Seenplatten Norddeutschlands und die großen Alpenseen. Gegen Ende der Eiszeit macht sich wieder Vulkanismus bemerkbar (Eifel).
Chemnitz ist Bestandteil der Feuersteinlinie. Die Feuersteinlinie ist die Linie der jeweils maximalen Gletschervorstöße der drei letzten Eiszeiten im norddeutschen Tiefland. In Mitteldeutschland ist sie damit die südliche Grenze der Elsterkaltzeit-Vergletscherung, in Nordwestdeutschland die der Saalekaltzeit-Vergletscherung.
Die Feuersteinlinie verläuft von der Nordsee über den Teutoburger Wald, weiter nördlich der Mittelgebirge und erstreckt sich dann vom Harz und folgt dann von West nach Ost den Städten Werningerode, Blankenburg, Friedrichsbrunn, Stolberg, Uftrungen, Nordhausen, Sondershausen, Mühlhausen, Langensalza, Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena-Lobeda, Stadtroda, Weida, Zwickau, Chemnitz, Hainichen, Roßwein, Siebenlehn, Freital, Bad Schandau und Oybin (in den kursiv geschrieben Orten stehen Eiszeitendenksteine)
