This multicache is located in Longmont. The first three locations take you through downtown, among historic buildings, the final location is close to our meeting place so that we can check it regularly. From the first location to the last location is 1.5 miles.
The last location, which is where the cache is located, is on private property. We have permission to have it there.
Go to N40°10.033’ W105 ° 6.142’, there you will find a map. On the map, find the building which you are standing next to. Take the year it was built and subtract it from 2043; this value is A.
Next, go to N40 ° 9.835’ W105° 6.A’. While standing there, look on a heading of 63° magnetic, 100 feet away, on a vertical angle of 30° above horizontal, there you will see a date. Take that date and subtract it from 2577; this value is B.
Next, go to N40° 10.201’ W105° 5.B’. While standing there, look due West. You will see two 2 digit numbers. Subtract the number on the right from the number on the left, and add it to 903. This is value C.
Biff’s Place cache is located at N40° 10.223’ W105° 4.C’.
Biff’s Place is a clear plastic box. When we placed it, we put three matchbox cars and a lego man in it, along with a log book and two pencils.
Note: Your GPS will not be able to pick up satellites very well at the first three locations due to the surrounding structures. Don’t be surprised if the location your GPS is giving you is actually 40 to 50 feet off. Also, none of the locations are in the street, so please don’t stand in the street, you might get hit by a car. You might want to check the locations against a map in addition to using your GPS.
Biff’s Place is a multicache. The first three locations are meant to get you to do a little map and compass reading. They are also meant to make you think about directions and derive headings even if you don’t have a compass. You might want to know that there is about 11 degrees difference between magnetic headings and true headings here. If the street appears to be going North in downtown Longmont, it is probably on a magnetic heading of about 350°. This multicache is also intended to get the cache hunter to pace off a distance. Your GPS probably will not work at location of the date when you are at the second cache site. You will probably have to pace off 100 feet. You will also have to be able to eyeball a 30° vertical angle, or bring an instrument to measure it. Another option is to use your hands as a method of angular measurement, this is what the cub scouts have been taught to do. Holding your arm out straight, spread your thumb and little finger as far apart as you can, they are about 17 to 18 degrees (300 mils for you military folks) apart. To get a true heading, you can use your watch and the sun. I’ll let you find out how to do that on your own. If you can’t find the method, ask a cub scout or boy scout.
This cache is also intended to get people to notice some of the historic buildings in Longmont.
Another note: Thank you to Thaun for pointing out the error in the second location. A thousand apologies for not catching that. Fixed it on 6/19/2003.
Found the box, everything is still in it, back on line 2/12/04.
