Geocache Description:

The location might look a little surprising at first, but yes, this cache really is in the middle of Lake Velence.

Most people know Balaton as the main holiday area in Hungary, but my family has always spent our summers at this smaller lake halfway between Budapest and Balaton. We had a family reunion at the lake and decided to mark the occasion with a cache. So 17 of us went to the site using different watercrafts to hide the cache.

- Spolier part -

Although it's not marked on most of the maps, the lake does not only have reed on it's surface, there are some real islands too. Our cache is hidden on one of these. The name "Paddle" refers to the paddle boats that you can rent at any of the nearby beaches to get to the location. It's also possible to skate there in the winter.

You can set off from any of the beaches, they are all about the same distance from the island. We recommend the public (free) beach at Velencefürdõ (47"13.176, 18"38.692). Here you can rent a paddleboat for 1100HUF per hour (about 5 euros). And one hour should be enough for the round trip to the cache. The distance from here is less than 700m, so the most courageous (with water resistant gps's and gifts) might not even need a boat, they could even swim to there.

About 30 meters from the hiding place there was a little pier that one could use to disembark. It wasn't in a too good shape, so no guarantee it's gone be there later. Be prepared to get a little muddy at the landing. Otherwise you can land at any side of the island and walk across. The vegetation is not very pleasant, pretty thorny, some sandals or slippers will come handy.

Once on the island, you should have no difficulty finding the cache. It's a regular tupperware container, yellow top, shown on one of the pictures.
