Geocache Description:

"DEVIL'S THROAT" is the perfect name for this natural sink hole into the earth. Sure makes one wonder where all the sand and gravel has gone. It sort of spooks me!

This cache is about 33 miles south of I-15 west of Mesquite. Take the Riverside exit. The first 24 miles are on an old oiled road and the last 9 miles are on a good gravel road. You can drive right to the cache. This is a pretty easy cache but this is serious country. Tell someone where you are going and take plenty of water. There is not a lot of traffic out this way and during the summer you could die out here before anyone came by. You don't want to wander off the main road unless you are experienced, equipted and prepared for off road desert travel. There is a 4 foot protective fence around the sink. However there is a large hole in the fence at one spot. You are safe enough outside the fense but to allow ANYONE (kids) inside the fense would be asking for trouble. You would not survive a fall into this hole. Our best guess is that it is 100 feet straight down. We noticed some crack lines several feet back from the edge. Getting inside the fense is just not a good idea. (Some low-life that we have to share the planet with destroyed the sign. Just send me a note and convince me you were here) To get credit for this cache and prevent me from deleting your log entry e-mail me and tell me the number represented by the saw marks on the back side of the sign post that is near the fense on the NE side. If any local people have interesting information about this sink please e-mail me and I may add it to the cache page. Cacher Sponge sent me the following: About two years ago a buddy of mine decided that he had to find out what was down there. We tied a rope around his truck bumper, threw it over the fence and he went down. He came up with quite a story. About half way down you hit a steep gravel and sand grade that slopes from one side of the hole to the other. At the bottom of the slope was the skeleton of a horse with barbed wire wrapped around its hooves, binding all four together. He seemed to think that it had been thrown in while it was still alive. Sponge needs some less brave and smarter friends I think. Thanks Sponge for the story. Have fun and be safe!
