Moderately easy terrain, 400' elevation gain on less than a 2.5 mile round trip, protected with rocks at top of rock face next to a juniper tree.
Taking S-2 south from 78, go just past park boundary, south of Shelter Valley, and go west on dirt road to end, about 1 mile. Park, and hike on trail up the canyon. This really is a "cool" canyon, with great rock "steps" and very verdant in the spring. We identified the following on our 90 minute hike: cacti: prickly pear, beavertail, buckhorn cholla, barrel, fishhook, and hedgehog, agave, mojave yucca, phacelia(blue, yellow -- Checker fiddleneck, white -- popcorn flower), chia, micro-poppies, wishbone plant, apricot mallow, Turkish mat, spurge, California evening primrose, canterbury bells, desert plum/apricot, brittlebush, goldeneye(?), rabbitbrush(?), desert paintbrush, white sage, wild buckwheat, lupine, larkspur, desert fir, catclaw, mistletoe, Fremont pin-cushion, deerweed, conifers: pinyon(from a distance), juniper, ephedra ... and a few we couldn't identify.
Cache is located at top of colourful (rainbow) rocky area just west of a small juniper growing out of rocks near the top, and is protected with some rocks. Cache is a mason jar containing:
- 1 bull necklace from some latin country
- 1 Canon blue filter for a 43mm diameter lens
- 1 bendable bugs bunny
- 1 SAM sew-on patch
- 1 green di
- 1 globe pencil sharpener
- 2 pencils
- 1 small notebook
- 1 santa anita pin
