Baltimore has a long, rich maritime history. This is a monument to the dangers entailed. The Pride Of Baltimore I and II, modern day 'Clipper' ships, serve as a worldwide goodwill ambassador.
The original Pride of Baltimore was commissioned in May 1977. She was the first Baltimore Clipper to be built in 150 years. “Pride of Baltimore” was the nickname of another famous ship, Chasseur, the largest and boldest of the legendary Baltimore-built topsail schooners that helped win the War of 1812. Pride sailed the Atlantic for nine years, serving as a goodwill ambassador for Maryland and the City of Baltimore. She logged 150,000 miles, roughly the equivalent of circumnavigating the globe six times.
Tragedy struck in May 1986 off the coast of Puerto Rico when the Pride of Baltimore was returning from a 15 month goodwill mission to Europe. This monument details what happened.
Pride II was commissioned in October 1988 as a sailing memorial to her namesake and the crewmen who lost their lives to the sea. Pride II is owned by the State of Maryland and continues to serve as a goodwill ambassador, promoting tourism and economic development for Maryland and the Port of Baltimore. She sails year-round with two full-time captains and a crew of eleven. Pride II recently completed a tour of Asia and finished first in her class in the Tall Ships 2000 transatlantic race from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Amersterdam. She made her film debut when, following a few cosmetic changes, Pride II was used as a stand-in for the Amistad in the popular Steven Spielberg film of the same name.
