“The Deeps” is a beautiful waterfall on the western branch of the Lester River, which is also known as Amity Creek. It gets its name because in early years it was claimed that the pool at the bottom of the falls was hundreds of feet deep. In actual fact it is only about 15 to 20 feet in depth. The falls has been created by water eroding through relatively soft layers of basalt. This particular type of basalt has a number of small cavities and depressions in it due to the original presence of volcanic gas bubbles. The two pictures below were taken in the early 1900’s. The bridge shown in the left picture has since been replaced. The amount of water going over the falls varies greatly during the year.
This has always been a popular place for kids to gather, especially in the summer. While swimming and jumping into the pool from the top of the falls are favorite activities, it is also the site for consumption of various liquids. The picture below is from 1904.
To approach this site and the cache, it is suggested that you park by the east branch of Lester River (N 46° 50.442, W 092° 00.364), walk over the bridge towards the west, and then find the trail going up the eastern side of Amity Creek. The pool at The Deeps has excellent fishing in the spring and the fall as trout and salmon congregate there since they cannot get over the falls. There is only one specific spot that you can fish from in order to have any chance of success and that will remain a secret with me.
