The Nelson Shelter is 3 miles northeast of Grand Rapids on the Mesabi Bike Trail which is also the Taconite Trail for snowmobiles in the winter. It was built by the snowmobilers in memory of a young man, Tim Nelson. There is a picnic table and a beautiful view of the Mine Pit lake below and the Prairie River. The trail winds northward between the two bodies of water.
Be aware that critters of all kinds may take shelter here, so be careful where you peek and poke.
