Geocache Description:

warbirds-sopwith-camel.jpg

Introduced in 1917, the WWI biplane was the most successful Allied fighter of the conflict, thanks to its excellent maneuverability and firepower. It was one of the earliest models to have its machine guns fire through the prop disc, making use of a synchronization gear to keep the prop intact. The nickname "Camel" came from the hump on the upper fuselage between the upper and lower wing, though it is not as pronounced as its moniker would imply. Powered by a variety of engines up to 150 hp, the Camel was comparatively fast and powerful, but over time as the war bore on it met more capable opposition and was relegated a ground attack role.
