Pyrus communis; Common Pear has been long cultivated with its origin probably arising from hybridisation between the wild species and many of over a thousand known cultivars.
Branches are smothered in blossom in April, giving way to sweet tasting pears and often rich autumn coloured foliage.
Once the site of a wild pear tree, the name is now merely a geographic reference point used by the dairy farm you see to the South.
Westwood Farm is the only remaining dairy farm in the village, owned by the same family now for four generations. Thirty or so years ago there were at least five other working farms in Weald with a dairy herd – a clear indicator of just how much the British farming industry has declined.
The cache is little way North of the footpath, as you come through the gate.
