March Hill holes are a series of hillocks on the NE slopes of March
Hill.
If you drive along the A640 from the east, as you approach March
Hill on the left, look down to see the series of "holes". The cache
is down there!
March Hill can easily be gained from the A640 if you park at the
top of Tom Clough.
From the top of March Hill, I'd say the panorama in this area is
unrivalled. Panning left to right, there is, what was until
recently, the Buckstones Inn on the A640; below this is March Haigh
Reservoir with Marsden behind & Emley mast in the far distance;
further right is Pule Hill with the old turnpike, the A62, climbing
up its flank to Standedge; behind this you can see the Black Hill
mast. Then the huge expanse of tussocky moorland to the far right
is Marsden Moor.
Descending to the cache from the summit of March Hill is easily the
most rewarding way. A path takes you down the ridge. Don't leave
the path for the cache too early or you will be descending very
steep slopes.
The path continues down the ridge to March Haigh Reservoir then
onto Marsden.
The hummocky appearance of the landscape is caused by
landslip.
Important Mesolithic finds (microliths, small flint tools) have
been made on March Haigh and Lominot hills.
Please do not, however tempted, go digging around and risk
destroying irreplaceable sites
