Geocache Description:

The above coordinates give the general location only and may, or may not, indicate a parking place, give a clue to the type of cipher or keyword (if it has one) or anything else in particular!

To find the cache you will need to crack the code.

In the log book you will find a clue to help with the next cipher in the series.

Make a note of any code letters in the log books as they may be needed for later caches in the series and any additional caches that may follow.

The twelve ciphers used in the series will, in general, increase in difficulty but all should be able to be broken within a few hours by pen & paper (i.e. word processor) methods. The caches have been located in varied terrains that will, in general, become more difficult towards the end of the series.

We hope you enjoy them.

A slightly different cipher and one that will probably put you off cards for life! This is the Solitaire cipher and we suggest you start with the description by Bruce Schneier.

The deck has been keyed using a meaningful word or phrase and the first 39 cards are

33 10 01 34 48 37 23 44 15 05 11 22 42 20 32 14 24 38 51 52 45 16 46 03 31 21 13 49 07 40 18 A B 29 28 25 36 30 19

Your task is to find the correct order for the remaining 15 cards and so decode the ciphertext

MVDOW GOZSD LGXGC IVGZG VVSEI TAWPF JZHZM VMYDC CWBNJ IFTHN LKNVT XKGD

To ease your burden the next four cards can be found in Cipher Cache 9.

This leaves you with the order of the eleven missing cards to find, a difficult, but not impossible, task.

If you are stuck or fancy some alfresco decoding the next five cards can be found in a micro cache at N51 46.Hotel Sierra Mike W3 7.Sierra Charlie November.

This is near(ish!) the final cache position and, more importantly, at a similar altitude so you might want to take your cards along with you and pick a calm day. Remember to take your code letters as well!

To make it a little quicker to decode, only the fractional minutes are given. The cache is at N51 45.??? W3 6.??? and the plaintext contains the three phonetic code letters preceded by N & W respectively.

Good views on a clear day. The paths are good and some almost head in the right direction. Please remember to take suitable clothing and footwear. Suggested parking coordinates are given although the cache can be approached from several directions.

A worked example of the method can be found here.

Please don’t include any sort of cipher text in your logs.

If you wish to tackle the codes but are unable to visit the caches, or would prefer to solve several of the codes before making the trip to bag the caches then we will release the ‘clue to the next cache’ if you email us the decoded message. Please feel free to write a note to log your success at breaking the code, but you will need to visit the cache to log a find!
