GEOLOGISET TAUSTATIEDOT
Tyynylaava näyttää koostuvan pienistä pehmeistä kappaleista, tyynyistä. Tyynylaavarakenne osoittaa laavan purkautuneen veteen. Vesi jäähdyttää laavan pinnan nopeasti, ja näin syntyy erillisiä laavapisaroita tai -paakkuja, joiden kovettunut kuori hidastaa sisäosan jähmettymistä. Nämä kappaleet käyttäytyvät kuitenkin plastisesti, koska ohut kuori murtuu tai joustaa ja sallii muodonmuutokset. Tyynyt kasaantuvat päällekkäin meren pohjalle, ja ylemmän tyynyn alapinta muotoutuu alla olevien tyynyjen ja niiden välien mukaan. Joskus näistä muodoista voidaan päätellä pohjan suunta siitä huolimatta, että tyynylaavakerokset ovat poimutuksessa kääntyneet pystyyn tai ylösalaisin.
KOHTEEN GEOLOGIA
Tällä alueella on useita tyynylaavapaljastumia. Laava on purkautunut mereen noin 1900 miljoonaa vuotta sitten.
TEHTÄVÄ

Public recreational area of Helsinki CIty. The site is located near a electric hig voltage line.
BACKGROUND GEOLOGY
Pillow lava seems to consist of small soft fragments, pillows. Pillow lava structure is an evidence of the fact that the lava was erupted in water. The water causes a rapid chilling of the crust of the lava, and it may form separate drops or lumps. The chilled crust is isolating the molten core from the water and slows the chilling. Pillows still act plastic because the thin crust brakes or bends and allows some kind of softness of the pillow. The pillows are settled at the sea bottom, and the bottoms of the upper pillows conform the upper parts of the underlying pillows and gaps between them. Sometimes because of these forms they can see the direction of sea bottom, in spite of that the lava beds are nowadays vertical or upside down.
GEOLOGY OF THIS SITE
There are several pillow lava outcrops on this area. The lava erupted to a sea 1900 million years ago.
TASK
1. Measure the diameter of a few pillows and write up the average size of the pillows.
