[ENG] This cache is at the "gate" of the area that may be nowadays called as "The Ruokolahti Lion Forest". This relatively easy-to-approach cache takes you to the border of the Kotasalo forest area. In 1992, Ruokolahti became known as the Finnish lion town. While working in the Kalpiiviita area (some 3km to the east from the cache), forestry technician Martti Auvinen faced a lion walking in these woods in late June. While escaping from this "king of animals", he ended up at the Kalpiiviita direction of the Kotasalo/Kotaniemi road that bypasses the cache.
Do you dare to enter deeper in the lion forest? It is recommendable after all! You will be able to see forest that has been planted some 40 years ago. However, it is good to know that the Kotasalo forest is used for elk/moose hunting instead of just lion hunting :) Yearly elk hunting time is between the end of September and the end of December. During that time it is advisable to wear bright coloured clothes (perhaps a yellow security vest) and preferably a red hat.
Being known as the lion town, Ruokolahti has nowadays included a lion printed on some of its public material.
This cache is also the release point of the travel bug "Elvi the Lioness of Ruokolahti" (TB27QQ7).

[FIN] Tämä helppo kätkö "Ruokolahden leijonaportti" on Kotasalon metsäalueen reunalla. Aluetta voisi hyvinkin kutsua nykyään "Ruokolahden leijonametsäksi". Vuonna 1992 kesäkuussa metsäteknikko Martti Auvinen oli työskentelemässä Kalpiiviidan suunnalla (noin 3km kätköpaikasta itään),ja hän havaitsi alueella leijonan. Säikähdettyään tätä eläinten kuningasta, metsäteknikko päätyi pakomatkansa päätteeksi Kotasalon/Kotaniemen tielle, joka kulkee aivan kätkön ohitse.
Jos suinkin vain uskaltaudut matkaamaan syvemmälle leijonametsään, löydät sieltä hyväkuntoista, tällä hetkellä (2008) noin 40-vuotiasta istutusmetsää, sekä metsästyslavoja ja eläinten ruokintapaikkoja. Metsästyslavat eivät ole kuitenkaan pelkkää leijonanmetsästystä varten, vaan jokasyksyistä hirvenmetsästystä varten. Hirvenmetsästysaika alkaa syyskuun lopussa ja jatkuu joulukuun loppuun. Jos alueella kulkee tuona aikana, kannattaa pitää päällään kirkkaanvärisiä vaatteita (esim. keltaista turvaliiviä) ja mielellään punaista lakkia.
Kun Ruokolahti tuli tunnetuksi leijonapitäjänä, se otti käyttöönsä leijonan monissa tilanteissa, osittain myös virallisessa viestinnässään.
