Talvisodan jälkeen v. 1940 Suomi joutui luovuttamaan alueitaan Neuvostoliitolle, mm. suuren osan Karjalaa. Kotinsa menetti yli 400 000 karjalaista, jotka asutettiin ympäri Suomea. Evakot perustivat useita paikallisia ja alueellisia harrastusryhmiä, yhdistyksiä ja seuroja pitämään yllä karjalaisia perinteitä ja kulttuuria, sekä ajamaan kotinsa menettäneiden asioita uusilla asuinsijoilla.
Näiden yhdistysten kattojärjestönä toimii Karjalan Liitto.
After the Winter War at 1940, Finland was forced to cede some of her areas, i.a. a large part of Karelia to Soviet. Over 400 000 Karelians lost their homes, and they were relocated all around Finland. The evacuees started several local and provincial organizations, clubs and associations to keep up the relationships, the karelian culture and traditions, and to to attend the interests of people who lost their homes. The Finnish Karelian League was established to organize these groups.
