The given coordinates take you at the Bear’s Stone. From the information table next to the stone you will find out the coordinates of the second spot. The cache IS NOT in the monument!
[FIN] KARHUNKIVI
Tällä paikalla kaatui Suomen kaikkien aikojen pahamaineisin karhuyksilö, ”Lopen tappajakarhu”.
Tämä karhu tappoi yli 100 lehmää ja lukemattoman joukon muita kotieläimiä vuosina 1884 – 1887,
ahkerina päivinään jopa 2 - 3 lehmää kerralla.
Karhu oli myös Lounais-Suomen alkuperäisen karhukannan viimeinen edustaja.
Karhu oli liikkuvaa lajia ja elämäntavoiltaan varsin merkillinen siinä suhteessa, että se ei juuri käynyt syönnöksillä entisillä haaskoillaan.
Näistä syistä jahtiyritykset päättyivät aina tuloksettomina.
Vuonna 1886 järjestettiin 300 miehen suurjahti, mutta karhu pääsi silloinkin livahtamaan heidän käsistään.
Kaadosta luvatut oman aikansa suurimpiin kuuluneet tapporahat sekä karhun kuuluisuus houkuttivat myös useita ammattimetsästäjiä sen perään.
Karhun hillittömyys, lehtikirjoituksien määrä sekä Hämeenläänin Metsästysseuran palkkaaman tunnetun metsästäjän kuolema saivat aikaan jo myytillistäkin varjoa eläimen ylle.
Karhu kohtasi lopulta tiensä pään 27.7.1887, torppari Kaarlo Skogbergin ampumana.
Kaadon jälkeen ”Tappajakarhu” oli maksusta nähtävänä Hämeenlinnassa turkkuri Lindqvistin pihalla.
Vuonna 1937 paikalle pystytettiin Kymi-yhtiön toimesta muistomerkki.
Kiven vieressä olevassa männyssä on näkyvissä pihkakoro johon luoti osui karhun lävistettyään.
[ENG] THE BEAR'S STONE
The most notorious bear in Finland, "The Killer Bear of Loppi" was shot on this place.
This bear killed more than 100 cows and an innumerable group of other domestic animals in years 1884 - 1887, during it’s diligent days as many as 2 - 3 cows at time.
The bear also was the last representative of the original bear stock of Southwest Finland.
The bear was a moving species and quite strange from its ways of life, because it did not really go to eat with its former carcasses.
For these reasons the hunt companies always ended fruitless.
In 1886, 300 men's bearhunt was arranged, but the bear was also then able to flee.
Several professional hunters also tempted behind it, because of the promised rewards from the killing and fame of the bear.
Unrestrainedness of the bear, number of the newspaper articles and the known hunter's death produced even mythic features to the animal.
The bear met it's death eventually 27.7.1887 by shot of the crofter Kaarlo Skogberg.
The bear was later to be seen from payment on the yard of furrier Lindqvist in Hämeenlinna.
In 1937 a monument was set up there by Kymi-yhtiö.
There is a trace visible in the pine tree next to the stone, where the bullet hits after piercing the bear.
