Geocache Description:

Church micro 379 Rawreth 012

St Nicholas Church

The foundation of this medieval church was unsafe and in 1823 it was rebuilt on the same foundations, necessitating demolition again. The present church was rebuilt, using old materials, in 1882, again on the same foundations. Subsidence, war damage, and an earthquake led to near-condemnation in 1943. The church has now been restored to good order. The 15th century tower, arch, north aisle, west wall, and south arcade survive from the medieval church.

Rawreth is a wedge of green on the edge of the District, forming a significant barrier of countryside between Rayleigh and Basildon. The community, although small in number, is great in achievement and spirit.

The area is mainly agricultural in nature with dispersed centres of population and pockets of industry. Historically, most of the farmhouses in Rawreth were moated manors, many of which survive today.

Please bring your own pen to sign the logbook

Plenty of parking available just down the road from the church at N 51 36.693 E 000 34.288
