The manufacturing of paper began in Finland as far back as the 1660s. The first manually-powered paper mill was established in the village of Tomasböle in the parish of Pohja in 1667. It made paper using flax, jute and cotton rags as raw material. However, the Tomasböle paper mill shut down in 1713 when Helsinki and Turku fell into Russian hands at the beginning of a period of oppression known as Isoviha (the Great Wrath). It would take 50 years for papermaking to start again in Finland.
