[FIN] Vammavaara sijaitsee Kemijokivarressa, noin 60 kilometriä Kemijokisuulta koilliseen. Verrattuna muihin eteläisen lapin korkeampiin vaaroihin tämä vaara sijaitsee poikkeuksellisen lähellä Kemijokivartta. Vaaran rinteillä on useampia kivirakka-alueita, näistä suurin ja näkyvin sijaitsee vaaran laen tuntumassa, laen eteläpuolella. Kivirakat ovat syntyneet viimeisimmän jääkauden loppuvaiheessa, noin 10.000 vuotta sitten, kun alueen päällä ollut massiivinen jäätikkö on sulanut ja muodostanut sisämeren (jota myös Ancylus-järveksi kutsutaan); vedenpinta tuossa Ancylus-järvessä on ollut jopa noin 200 metriä nykyistä perämeren pintaa korkeammalla. Ancylus-järven aallokko ja jäät ovat ruhjoneet tuolloisen pienen saaren, nykyisen Vammavaaran laen, etelärantaa ja muodostaneet sen minkä nyt näemme kivirakkana ja mitä joskus myös ”pirunpelloksi” kutsutaan. Tämän päivän Vammavaaran laki kohoaa 228 metriä meren pinnan yläpuolelle. Kätköpaikan lähettyviltä avautuu uljaat näköalat varsinkin etelän ja lännen suuntiin sekä Kemijokivarteen; kirkkaalla säällä on mahdollista erottaa Kemin kaupungin korkeimmat rakennelmat runsaan 60 kilometrin päässä.
Alueen yläpuolisella kalliolla sijaitseva iso risti ei ole minkään yksittäisen tapahtuman muistomerkki, vaan alueen omistajan pystyttämä sen jälkeen kun paikallinen seurakunta alkoi 1990-luvulla järjestämään paikalla Marian ilmestyspäivän (useimmiten maaliskuun viimeinen sunnuntai) ulkoilmatilaisuuksia, joiden yhtenä teemana on ollut yhteisvastuukeräys. Tapahtuma on nyt järjestetty jo kuusitoista kertaa ja paikallinen puolustusvoimien varikko on tarjonnut tapahtumaan lähikuljetuspalvelua parin telaketjuajoneuvon (”Bandvagn”) avulla.
Kätkön sijaintipaikka rakennelmineen on yksityisellä maa-alueella mutta alueen omistaja haluaa paikan olevan kaikkien siitä kiinnostuneiden käytävissä; hän on jopa pystyttänyt alueelle laavun ja uudemman, täysin katetun tulisijallisen autiotuvan. Kunnioitathan tätä hienoa vieraanvaraisuutta jättämällä paikat käyntisi jälkeen vähintään yhtä siistiin kuntoon kuin ne olivat tullessasi.
Tämä ei todellakaan ole ”drive-in” –kätkö: paikalle pääsee helposti ainoastaan riittävän lumisena talvi-aikana moottorikelkalla. Paikalle etelästä tuleva polku lähtee metsäautotien varresta ja on kartasta katsottuna vain runsaan kilometrin mittainen, mutta aikaa sille on syytä varata selvästi enemmän kuin vastaavalle matkalle tavanomaisella metsäpolulla. Polku ei liioin sovi aivan pienimmille eikä liikuntarajoitteisille. Jos kuitenkin uskaltaudut paikalle, palkitsee tämä vaara sinut erityisellä luontokokemuksella ja ainutlaatuisella maisemalla Kemijokivarteen.
Polun lähtöpiste löytyy vaaran eteläpuolisen Vammavaarantien varresta, 3,5 kilometriä Vammavaarantien risteyksestä (oheisena risteyksen koordinaatit). Polku on alkumetreillään vanhan metsäkoneen ajouralla, metsän reunasta löytyy ensimmäiset muovinauhamerkinnät (keltaiset / oranssit muovinauhat). Pidä nämä nauhamerkinnät näkyvissäsi koko ajan, sillä polkua ei ole näkyvissä reitin kallioisimmilla osilla! Polun keskivaiheilla on myös lyhyt vetisempi osuus, joten tukevat vedenpitävät vaelluskengät ovat suositeltava varustus tälle reitille. Tämä polku ei ole suositeltava voimakkaiden sateiden tai lumien sulamisvesien aikaan. Kaikenlaiset pyörät on parasta jättää Vammavaarantien varteen.
Kätköpurkki on n. 0,5 litran kokoinen, joten siihen mahtuu pari pienempää kulkijaa.
[ENG] Hill of Vammavaara is located almost on riverside of the river Kemijoki and about 60 kilometers northeast from the estuary of the river Kemijoki. In comparison to the other bigger hills of this area, hill of Vammavaara is located extraordinarily close to the river Kemijoki, the biggest river of Finland. On the slopes of this hill are several areas consisting of purely bigger rocks and plant life on these areas is very limited. The largest and most notable of these rocky areas is located quite close to the top of the hill, on the south side of the top. These rocky areas were formed soon after the last ice age, about 10.000 years ago, when the the massive glacier covering this area had melted. An inland sea (which is also called lake Ancylus) was formed after the melting of the glacier, and the level of water in this inland sea was even 200 meters higher compared to the present sea (Bay of Bothnia). Beating of the waves and crushing of the ice blocks have formed these rocky areas, which were then coasts of a small island; this small island is nowadays the top of the hill of Vammavaara.
These rocky areas are called “rakka” in the finnish language, and sometimes they are also called “fields of the devil”. The present top of the hill of Vammavaara rises 228 meters above the sea level. Spectacular scenic view opens out from the surroundings of this cache site, especially to the southern and western directions and to the riverside of the river Kemijoki. On a bright weather, it is possible to spot the tallest buildings of the city of Kemi, about 60 kilometers to the south from the hill of Vammavaara.
The big cross on the rock, above the area of the buildings, is not reminiscent of any single event; it was placed by the owner of the area, a few years after the local parish started to arrange events in this place on the Annunciation Day (usually the last Sunday of march). This event has now been arranged sixteen times, and the local depot of the defence forces of Finland has provided support to the close transportation by means of a couple of a tracked vehicle, “Bandvagn”.
The cache site is located on a private estate. The owner of this estate wants however that this place may be visited by the outdoor people, and he has even built a shelter and a completely enclosed wilderness hut, equipped with a fireplace; these facilities are available to all visitors without prior permission. Fellow geocachers, let us honour this kind of fine hospitality by leaving the buildings in a neat condition after our visit!
This cache is definitely not a “drive-in” cache; the cache site is easily accessible only by a snowmobile, and even then there should be a thick snow coverage on the area, due to the rocks. The trail coming to the site from south starts from the side of forest road (see coordinates). The length of this trail is less than a mile, but you should have substantially more time for this trail than you need for a similar distance on a typical forest trail. The trail is not suitable for the smallest kids or persons with a limited mobility. If you however dare to visit this place, this hill will award you with a special nature experience, and a spectacular scenic view to the riverside of river Kemijoki.
The trailhead is located alongside a road called ”Vammavaarantie”, you should drive 3,5 kilometers from the crossing of Vammavaarantie (see coordinates). The first hundred meters of this trail is on a track of a forest machine, after that (on the edge of the forested area) you should see yellow or orange plastic stripes attached to the trees; keep these strips in sight all the time when on this trail, because of the trail is not visible on the rocky phases of this route! In the middle of this trail is also a short wet phase, thus solid waterproof hiking shoes are recommended equipment for this trail. This trail is not recommended during (and shortly after) excessive rain, neither during darkness. All kind of bikes (even the most rugged MTB’s) should be left to the trailhead.
The volume of the cache box is about 0,5 liters, so it can accommodate a couple of smaller travel bugs.
