Geocache Description:

The most elusive creature in Western Pennsylvania -- the Beavecoon. Solve this puzzle to find his lair!

** The coordinates listed are NOT the location of the cache, but rather of the best parking spot. **

Long spoken of only in folklore and legend, the beavecoon first came into the national spotlight in May 2010 on an episode of iCarly. The creature is described as being "yay long, yay wide, head of a beaver, rump of a raccoon."

The beavecoon has, of course, been native to the lands of Western Pennsylvania since early times. The Indians of the region knew him as of his as yewa chamaneemma, loosely translated as "ring-tailed dam builder". Still, the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) has refused to acknowledge the existence of this illustrious fur bearer, even in the face of such definitive proof as this photo:

None the less, YOU can find the Beavecoon for yourself! Begin by PRINTING this grid, and take it with you on your hunt:

Puzzle grid

Now you should acquaint yourself with these other combination-animals, all of which ARE acknowledged by the PGC. Visit each cache below for one clue. After collecting the four clues, you will be directed to the lair of the Beavecoon!

Turkey Vulture (GC2Y6YW)

Deer Mouse (GC2Y6Z8)

Fox Squirrel (GC2Y6ZG)

Leopard Frog (GC2Y6ZK)

LOCATION NOTES: All five caches are located on the south side of Cross Creek County Park. This is a wild, unimproved area which attracts a LOT of hunters. Please be aware of the hunting seasons, and during the season, be sure to wear plenty of fluorescent orange (or better yet, wait until Sunday!) PA Hunting Season link

Attack Plan: Do "Deer Mouse" and "Turkey Vulture", then go BACK to the parking area. Follow the trailhead I marked to go to "Fox Squirrel" and "Leopard Frog", and then head to the final from there. When you leave Leopard Frog, go to the trail cross (see the included waypoints) and turn LEFT. Follow the trail around the pond until you get to the far (southern) end of the pond, and THEN you can follow your pointer to the cache.

The cache is a 50-cal ammo box. Please trade fair or trade up. Be sure to replace the cache with something heavy to hold down the "camouflage". Do not attempt to pet any beavecoons you find in the area.

Congratulation for the First to Find (and a big thank-you for helping to iron out some problems) goes to Gob-ler. A thank you, too, to my friend Tony from the cache group "LICH" for showing me this great park.
