Kaksi norjalaista herrasmiestä, Ole Nerdrum ja Olaf Bulow "löysivät" Stockforsin alueen vuosisadan vaihteessa, ja perustivat aluelle puuhiomon. Oy Stockfors Ab olikin valmistuessaan 1902 yksi Suomen suurimmista puuhiomoista. Se valmisti puuhioketta ja märkämassaa paperiteollisuuden tarpeisiin sekä vientiin.
Tuotanto häiriintyi monin tavoin sotavuosina 1939–1945, mutta vuoden 1946 toimintakertomuksessa toiminnan sanotaan jo olevan "normaalia". Yhtiöllä oli tuolloin hyvät valmiudet aloittaa mittava tuotantokapasiteetin maksimointi, joka toteutettiinkin menestyksellisesti tulevina vuosina ja vuosikymmeninä.
Oy Stockfors Ab:ksi nimensä vuonna 1975 muuttaneen yhtiön toiminta käsitti 1980-luvun alussa puuhiomon, metallituotetehtaan, voimalaitoksia, metsäosaston ja myllyn. Vuonna 1984 Enso-Gutzeit Oy osti Oy Stockfors Ab:n. Se ei ollut kiinnostunut pienestä hiomosta vaan yhtiön 5 500 hehtaarin metsäomaisuudesta ja voimalaitoksista.
Nykyään vanhan tehdasalueen omistaa Reino Uusitalo, joka on yhdessä museoviraston kanssa tehnyt mittavat entisöintityöt.

Two Norwegian gentlemen, Ole Nerdrum and Olaf Bulow "discovered" the region of Stockfors in the turn of the century, and established a conducive groundwood mill. Stockfors Oy Ab, was when completed in 1902 one of Finland's largest mechanical pulp mill. It produced a wet pulp and groundwood pulp for paper industry and for export.
Production was disrupted in many ways during the war years 1939-1945, but the 1946 activity report of operations is said already to be "normal." The company at the time was well prepared to begin massive production capacity maximization, which was carried out successfully in the coming years and decades.
Stockfors Oy Ab's (the name of the company from 1975) operations consisted in the early 1980s, a groundwood mill, metal fabrication plant, power plants, the forest department and the mill. In 1984 Enso-Gutzeit Oy bought Stockfors Oy Ab. It was not interested in a small mill, but rather the 5 500 hectares of forest assets and power plants.
Nowadays the old mill site is owned by Reino Uusitalo, who has done extensive restoration works together with museum authorities.
