Iso-Huopalahti is one of Helsinki’s largest old landfills and it was in use right up until the end of the '70s. This is the only large landfill area right next to the sea, and one of Helsinki's "big three". It was quite common to establish landfill areas just outside the city boundary. This one is at the Espoo-Helsinki border.
After the landfill area of Pasila was closed, Iso-Huopalahti landfill served as Helsinki's primary waste disposal site from 1963 to 1979. At the cache site you can see what kind of things people threw away in the earlier days. Before the landfill there was a water treatment plant. Most of the land filling happened in the '70s. The landfill from the '60s is now below sea level. The total waste landfill is approximately 3.5 million m³.
After closing the landfill in 1979, the area has been reconditioned and landscaped for recreation purposes. More eastwards you will find a frisbeegolf track and the Tali golf course.
