Geocache Description:

Difficulty and terrain relate both to this cache and the trail as a whole. The area can be hilly and muddy in places, even for some time after the rain. Watch out for spiky trees and slippy ground.

This is one of two new caches that we are placing as our first ever caches.

This can be done solo or part of a trail - see below

You are looking for a small box, but it’s been a bit camouflaged. At the time of placing it contained a logbook and some small swapables a a small spirit level, a whale "Blott" rubber and a pink peg.

This cache Georges Treasure and its partner Gorgeous George are both named after our family cat George who sadly passed away in 2013.

Congratulations for first to find go to Tarra&Co .

The Merrow to Newlands Cache Trail

We started Geocaching in January of 2014, as a way of getting out and about and getting to new areas; and we have really enjoyed it. So to help others enjoy it we wanted to do something that we love and make a bit of a trail. Not having the time or energy to place a large number of caches so early on what we have done is provided some details below of how this cache forms part of a trail from Merrow Downs to Newlands corner, taking in both of our caches and several left by other geocachers.

Thanks to all the cache owners who gave permission and encouragement for this trail

You can either park at Newlands corner walk down the hill and back up for a rewarding cup of tea. Or as we have suggested here you can park at Merrow downs walk up the hill have a cup of tea and then walk down. The trail is on wide path, it is hilly in places and can get muddy and slippy after rain.  There is a visitor centre and picnic area at Newlands corner. If you do all 10 caches this should take you around 2 hours including hunting time.

All the Geocaches can be seen by using this bookmark,

Alternatively we have done the route by the method of adding Waypoints in for the other caches, you will also see details below. you could go huinting just based off our waypoint coordinates, or a far safer option is just to use the waypoints as guides and use the links below to find the specific cache pages for each cache.

Any coordinates for the caches are taken as of March 2014. You may follow our order or choose your own.

  1. WP1 – Merrow Downs Parking - N 51° 14.376 W 000° 32.246
Merrow downs is a lovely walking area so close to Guildford, it has some great history too as you will soon see.
  2. WP2 – Merrow Downs - GC1P8XJ - N 51° 14.207 W 000° 32.675
Owned by Woking Wonders – We found this quite a tricky find, but don’t feel too low about it there are some easier ones.
  3. WP3 - Merrow Prisoner of War Camp - GC1MY2M - N 51° 14.284 W 000° 32.248
Owned by Woking Wonders. Don’t worry you won’t be taken prisoner. This was our first ever find, so if we can do it anyone can.
  4. WP4 – Georgeous George – GC4ZFGR- N 51° 14.239 W 000° 31.948
Owned by Wrong Direction. Our first cache.
  5. WP5 - SOS: secrets of Scooby - GC4YN93 - N 51° 14.228 W 000° 31.609
Owned by tvdwiel could the GPS be off in these trees? You will be meeting Scooby later on.
  6. WP6 – Georges Treasure – GC4ZFNM – N51 14.186 W000 31.373
    This is our second cache
  7. WP7 - Tigress's Treasure - GC4JH81 - N 51° 14.150 W 000° 30.988
Owned by Tarra&Co- This was also a first cache by a new geocacher, so that’s 3 already on this trail…
  8. WP8 - Scooby's Treasure - GC2X5Y1 - N 51° 14.166 W 000° 30.680
Owned by tvdwiel. Meet Scooby, and another first hide.
  9. WP9 - Newlands Corner - N 51° 13.978 W 000° 30.385
You made it to Newlands corner, you will have seen the visitor centre so rest a while if you want, one more to go and then you can go home.
  10. WP10 - Another Totally Puzzle-Free Multi - GC19N5X N 51° 13.965 W 000° 30.526
Let’s finish on a puzzle, owned by tjapukai. As this is a puzzle it has its own waypoints so rather than embed those here just go to the cache page above and look for the two waypoints and a quick calculation will get you to cache number 10.

That’s it from us, there are more around, but our official trail ends here. If you do fancy doing more before you head back to Merrow downs, there are 3 more we could suggest including two that are a mile or so away on the North Down path.

The following are not part of the official trail as no permissions from CO’s have been secured

  • Newlands Corner - GC1BWE3 - N 51° 13.978 W 000° 30.385
    Owned by thumpstar.
  • One or Two Trees - GC2KT54 - N 51° 13.936 W 000° 29.012
Owned by Stula Kiss. This is another puzzle, and a bit tricky at least it was for us.
  • West Hangar Wonder - GCH4QH - N 51° 13.860 W 000° 28.662
Owned by team mulgrave this is a lovely old classic that has been there since 2003.
