Puistometsän historia alkoi vuonna 1883, jolloin Venäjällä
asetehtailijana rikastunut eversti Hugo Standertskjöld osti
Vanajaveden rannalta Karlbergin kartanon tiluksineen. Vuosina 1883
- 1910 Standertskjöld toteutti mahtavan hankkeen ja rakennutti
tiluksilleen englantilaistyyppisen puiston, joka nykyään tunnetaan
Aulankona. Hän rakennutti alueelle muun muassa isot tekolammet
Joutsenlammen ja Metsälammen, näyttävät graniittilinnan rauniot,
näköalaterasseja, huvimajoja, näkötornin ja tekosaaret. Lisäksi
alueelle istutettiin ulkomaisia puulajeja, kukkia ja pensaita.
Mäntykärjessä sijaitsevat tekosaaret rakennettiin joutsenlampien
kaivusta syntyneestä maa-aineksesta.
Molemmat kohteet ovat erittäin hyviä piknik-paikkoja.
Tekojärvien rannoilla on useia retkipöytäryhmiä. Molemmissa
tekosaarissa on kota ja nuotiopaikka. Puut hoituvat kaupungin

The history of Aulanko park began, when Hugo Standestskjöld bought
the estate of Karlberg. Between 1883 and 1910 Standerskjöld carried
out a huge plan and built big artificial lakes and islets,
artificial castle ruins, summerhouses and lookoutspots. Ain
addition to that they planted all kinds of foreign trees and
flowers. Artificial lakes were built from the soil left over from
the digging of two ponds for swans in Aulanko.
Both target places are very good places for piknik. By lakes there
are several pikniktables. In the islets there are two lap huts with
fireplaces. Wood is brought over by town workers. More about
