In the 1960's and 1970's Göteborg was one of
the leading shipbuilding sites in the world but today there are
only memories left. In the mid 1970's about 15000 people were
employed in the shipping industry. Counting all kinds of suppliers
up to 200 000 people was depending on the shipping industry,
including my late fathers company! The last ship that was built
left the Arendal shipyard 1988. It was the icebreaker
Oden. I was actually working on the last ship equipped at
the Eriksberg Shipyard (in the summer of 1981), even after the
shipyard was officially closed. There are some more shipyards to be
found, but the four giving the names to the caches are the most
important ones.
Enjoy the caches in the hot parts of Göteborg
there is a lot of action on the old shipyards sites. In the more
central ones there are mainly residential buildings, and at Arendal
there are industrial areas.
More information about the shipyards can be found
here: Varvshistoriska Föreningen i
Göteborg (unfortunately only in Swedish)
Lindholmen 1847 - 1976
This has been a shipbuilding area since the
1600's. It used to be one of the largest shipyards in Sweden.
The dock is now surrounded with residences and the dock itself is a
harbour for leisure boats.
The cache is hidden close to the dock. The
reception is not good here so you may read the
hint.
