The rapids of Kalkkistenkoski is the place where the waters of the
large lake Päijänne begin to flow towards the Gulf of Finland. This
is the beginning of the river Kymijoki. The place is very popular
among birdwatchers and other fans of nature. Take a good pair of
binoculars with you as there will probably be plenty of things to
see.
You had better park your car at N61°17.405 E025°35.564 as this
is the place where the public road ends ("Yleinen tie päättyy").
From here, there's some 1.2 kilometres walking distance to the
cache. At first it's a gravel road and the last 400 metres are on a
forest trail.
On your way to the cache location you can also visit the
beautiful village Kalkkinen and the nearby Canal of Kalkkinen.
Kalkkistenkosken kautta mahtavan Päijänteen vedet aloittavat
matkansa kohti Suomenlahtea. Kymijoki alkaa tästä! Paikka on hyvin
suosittu lintuharrastajien ja muidenkin luonnonystävien
keskuudessa. Kannattaa ottaa hyvät kiikarit mukaan koska nähtävää
on todennäköisesti paljon.
Auto on parasta jättää koordinatteihin N61°17.405 E025°35.564,
johon yleinen tie päättyy. Siitä on noin 1,2 kilometrin kävelymatka
kätkölle. Alkumatka on soratietä ja viimeiset 400 metriä
helppokulkuista metsäpolkua.
Matkalla kätköpaikalle kannattaa pistäytyä kauniissa Kalkkisten
kylässä ja pysähtyä läheiselle Kalkkisten kanavalle.
