There is a traditional song in Finland that tells about a grandfather's island. This cache is located on an island that once belonged to my grandfather (or at least a small part of it did). He had been entitled as a “Salmon master” of Teno after he got a salmon that weighted almost 30kg (and this is not a fish story :-). Arriving to the cache is very difficult. First, you need to find a way to the beach of Teno. It is hard, because it is well habitated at least in the side of Finland. There is a sign ’lossitie’ for a narrow free route to the beach. It ends nearby the island. Then you need to find a way to cross the river if you arrive by summertime.
I have myself arrived to the island at least with three ways: using a wooden boat with a motor, using a rubber boat and walking with fisherman's pants and a stick to keep me dry :-). This method needs a dry summer and exact timing! It is not possible every year. It is also possible to arrive by swimming, but the river is usually cold and fast-flowing. Two courageous cachers with dry suits have proved that swimming is really possible! And remember: beware of terns. They will attack if you come too close to their nests!
Notice that this is not a vacation cache; I have a local maintainer for it. The cache might also be available during winter but I wouldn’t count on that. It has been hidden in April during Easter and on that time it was not covered by snow. The amount of snow and ice vary much between years though. Disregarding the wet part, the terrain of the cache is 2 stars. The livestock attribute refers to reindeers. They are not usually dangerous and tend to avoid human contact. However, I suggest to avoid male reindeers during mating season ( = autumn.)
It would be also nice to hear of you even though you haven’t tried to approach the cache, but have seen the island and have probably thought of means to get there. Feel free to post a note!
Kaikki varmastikin tuntevat laulun vaarinsaaresta. Tämä saari kuului isoisälleni, joka myös aikoinaan Tenojoen lohikuninkaaksi nimitettiin. Hänen saamansa 30-kiloinen lohi ei ole kalajuttu :-).
Kätkölle saapuminen on haastavaa. Ensin tulee päästä tenojoen rantaan, joka on ainakin kätkön kohdilta Suomen puolelta asutettua, Tenon lossitie on todennäköisesti lähin vapaa rantautumispaikka. Tämän lisäksi tulee keksiä keino ylittää vuolaasti virtaava joki mikäli saavut kesäaikaan.
Itse olen ylittänyt joen kolmella eri tapaa: kirkkoveneellä jossa on perämoottori, kumiveneellä (paluu oli rankkaa kun toinen airo hajosi) ja kävellen, kalastajanhousut ja puinen keppi apunani. Viimeksi mainittu keino onnistuu vain kuivan kesän loppuaikana, eikä ole joka vuosi edes mahdollista. Uiminenkin on vaihtoehto, joskin joki on kylmä ja virtaus nopeaa. Kaksi rohkeaa kätköilijää kuivapuvuissaan ovat osoittaneet tämän mahdolliseksi! Saarella on syytä varoa tiiroja. Ne käyvät ärhäkästi kimppuun jos olet liian lähellä pesää.
Kätköllä on minun lisäkseni paikallinen ylläpitäjä, joten se ei ole ”lomakätkö.” Kätkön voi ehkä löytää myös talvella, mutta varmuutta siitä ei ole. Se on alunperin piilotettu huhtikuussa suksilla mennen ja silloin en joutunut kaivuupuuhiin. Veden ja jään määrä vaihtelee kuitenkin näillä leveysasteilla reippaasti. Jos ympäröivää vettä ei huomioida, terrain on 2. Livestock-attribuutti tarkoittaa poroja. Ne eivät yleensä ole vaarallisia vaan ennemminkin karttelevat ihmisiä. Rykimäaikaan ( = syksyllä ) kannattaa kuitenkin vältellä erityisesti sarvekkaita uroksia.
Olisi myös mukava kuulla niistä kätköilijöistä, jotka ovat käyneet vilkaisemassa saarta ja ehkä pohtineet keinojakin sinne pääsemiseksi mutta jättäneet kuitenkin väliin sillä kertaa. Kirjoita vaikka note jos siltä tuntuu!
