Geocache Description:

Near the memorial of the naval battle of Gangut July 27th 1714

The battle of Gangut (the name comes from the Russian translitteration of "Hangö udd", which means Hanko peninsula in Swedish) was one of the first major victories for the Russian navy. The Swedish fleet under the command of Schoutbynacht Nils Ehrenskiöld was outnumbered by the Russian fleet, which was under the command of Admiral Aparaxin together with Tsar Peter the Great himself.

According to investigations conducted by Alexander II the battle took place nearby this location. In 1870 he had a memorial built here; a cross in dark granite. To celebrate the 200 year anniversary of the victory the Russians started to build a monument in 1914. The construction work was interrupted by World War I. In 1928 the civil guard in Bromarv completed this monument to honor Nils Ehrenskiöld and his brave men.

Due to the history of the place, the most appropriate way to come here is by boat. A quay is provided only about 50 meters to the north of the memorial monuments. Here you also find a guestbook for visiting geomuggles. If you opt to come by geomobile, please note that the road to the site is barred about three km to the south and some two km to the north. But if you run into the northern barrier, you are already trespassing on a private road. Please respect the roadsign you should have seen a couple of kilometers earlier! I recommend that you park your car 1.6 km (as the crow flies) to the west of the cache. From there it's a nice hike through the woods, along a path that you should find on a good map. A section of this path appears to go near a defence line from a much more recent war.
