A cache on Telegrafberget in Haikkoo.
[FIN] Alue, jossa liikut, on luonnonsuojelualuetta. Käytä siis etsiessäsi mahdollisuuksien mukaan polkuja. Kallio on talvella ja märkänä todella liukas, joten katso mihin astut! Purkki voi jäädä lumen alle, jos sitä on paljon. Kalliolla sijaitsevasta näkötornista avautuu hienot maisemat merelle. Tornista näkyy kirkkaalla ilmalla myös Nesteoilin Porvoon jalostamo.
Auton voi jättää kätkön lähellä sijaitsevalle Haikon kartanon parkkipaikalle, josta kävelymatkaa kätkölle on n. 500 m. Kartanolle pääsee myös paikallisliikenteen bussilla nro 2, joka kulkee Porvoon torilta Tolkkisiin.
[ENG] The area around the cache is nature conservation area. Please use paths as much as possible. Rocks are very slippery in the winter and rainy weather, so mind your step! When there's plenty of snow, the cache might be under it. Remember to check the scenery from the sightseeing tower near the cache. When the weather is clear you can also see the Nesteoil's oil refinery of Porvoo.
You can leave your car to the parking place of Haikko Manor. The walk to the cache is about 500 m from there. You can also take the bus n:o 2 from the marketplace of Porvoo to Tolkkinen (get off the bus at the manor).

[FIN] Historiaa:
Krimin sodan aikana, vuonna 1854, rakennettiin Hangon ja Pietarin Kronstadtin välille optinen lennätinlinja. Viestit kulkivat semaforien eli siipiopastinten avulla. Linjaa käytettiin vain kesäaikana. Asemia oli noin 10 km:n välein ja viestit luettiin kiikarien avulla. Kesällä 1855 linjaa jatkettiin Hangosta Uuteenkaupunkiin, jolloin sen piirissä oli koko Suomen etelärannikko.
Haikkoon Telegrafbergetiä lähimmät asemat olivat Kulloon Telegrafbergettillä ja Porvoon Myllymäellä. Asemia hoitivat venäläiset sotilaat ja viestejä lähetettiin ympäri vuorokauden. Hangon ja Kronstadtin välisen lennätinlinjan hoitamiseen tarvittiin noin 500 miestä.
Lennätinlinja toimi vain kaksi kesää, jonka jälkeen se lakkautettiin. Syynä oli sähköisen lennättimen käyttöönotto.
Telegrafbergetin luonnonsuojelualue perustettiin 1961 ja se siirtyi Porvoon maalaiskunnan (nyk. Porvoon kaupungin) omistukseen 1976.

During the Krim War in 1854 an optical telegraph line was built between Hanko and Kronstadt in St. Petersburg. The messages were forwarded with semaphores and it was used only in the summertime. The distance between stations were about 10 km and the message was read with binoculars. In the summer of 1855 the line was continued from Hanko to Uusikaupunki. That time it covered the whole coast of southern Finland.
The nearest telegraph stations to the Telegrafberget in Haikkoo were the Telegrafberget of Kulloo and Myllymäki in Porvoo. The stations were run by the russian soldiers and messages were sent around the clock. It took 500 men to manage the whole line between Hanko and Kronstadt.
The telegraph line was used only two summers after which it was replaced by the electrical telegraph.
Telegrafberget's nature conservation area was founded in 1961. Today it is owned by the town of Porvoo.
