Geocache Description:

Hike to the summit of Thompson Peak (3,982 feet) and find the cache near the top of the mountain.

This cache is located just off the summit of Thompson Peak (3,982 feet), the third highest peak of the McDowell Mountains of Scottsdale and Fountain Hills. Thompson Peak is the peak in the southern part of the McDowells with the radio facilities on top.

There are several ways to get to the summit of this peak. The route that I took begins at the end of Golden Eagle Blvd. in Fountain Hills (N 33° 38.142' W 111° 46.080'). Lance Armstrong could ride a mountain bike up to the top of the mountain; most geocachers would prefer to hike, or use a combination of mountain biking and hiking.

The cache box is a 30 caliber ammo can that contains an assortment of small toys, golf balls, and other items. There is a camera in the cache, so please take a picture of yourself and other members of your team. If you take the last picture, please take the camera back home with you and contact me as soon as possible. I will then send you a PhotoWorks.com mailing envelope with enclosed payment for photo developing, and you can put the camera in the envelope and put it in the mail to develop the film.

Additional Hints (Encrypt)

The cache is on the east slope of the mountain, about 152 feet northeast of the locked gate on the fence around the radio facility (N 33° 38.652' W 111° 48.716') and 156 feet north of the helicopter landing pad (N 33° 38.651' W 111° 48.707'). It is under the north side of a large rock that is sticking out of the slope. Look for the cache from the uphill side.
