Geocache Description:

THIS IS A THEMED CACHE
To locate this cache, you will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle, emergency equipment (water, tools, first aid, etc.), and a pass for access to the Barry M Goldwater Bombing Range available from BLM, or the Human Resources facility aboard MCAS Yuma. This is a relatively simple process that places responsibility squarely upon the traveler.

Photos taken by those of you who found the cache using the disposable camera in it are available at our personal web site at www.geocities.com/ngriffin_az.

CAVEAT / EXPLANATION:01/21/03
After reading all the logs for this cache, I felt compelled to explain the proximity to Tinajas Altas Cache. My husband and I are new to geocaching and he had been planning this cache since the moment we learned about the hobby/sport b/c it is a camping spot he and his dad have used before. Since the other cache is a little farther south, he decided this location would be perfect b/c it fits the theme of the book (which has been taken by Hipparchus and turned into a travel bug, great idea! (visit link) I must tell you he spent a little bit of money ordering and disguising the ammo box and purchasing the contents. A lot of thought went into this Kid Rodelo Cache and we are very happy that everyone has enjoyed it so much....especially since the addition of the adult beverage. ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
The most direct route to the cache is on the eastern leg of the Camino del Diablo. (see also Tinaja Altas and Motown 3 caches). Follow Avenue 25E south from old US 80, cross the canal and look for Goldwater Range sign. Stay on the maintained gravel road and follow it south. You'll be driving on the Devil's Highway, a route steeped in history from prehistoric times to the present.

As you near the Tinajas Altas Mtns. south of Raven's Butte, an unmaintained road will fork off to the right along the eastern edge of the mountains. Follow this until you arrive at the parking area (N32° 19.084 W114° 03.007). This is a great place to camp as you can easily see. Be aware of the ancient campers that proceeded you. You can find pottery shards and grinding holes worn smooth in the granite rocks around the cave.

The cache will be about 100 yards from the cave campsite to the south, just a few feet up the weathered granite rocks from the desert floor. The cache is loosely based on a western novel by Louis L'Amour that was set along these very mountains about the turn of the century. The cache will take some searching to find. Keep an eye open for small, weathered depressions in the natural granite. The cache will be in an old military ammo can painted to blend in with the rocks.

The original cache contained: a copy of the Louis L'Amour book, a silver Mexican Real dated 1881, a snake bite kit, a multifunction whistle compass keychain, a tin of Altoids, an old ore cart railway spike, a piece of Chrysocolla, a P38 can opener (from the Tinajas Altas cache), and a disposable panoramic camera (for you to take a photo and leave for others). Your replacement contents should be appropriate to the theme, oldwest, Louis L'Amour, etc.

Enjoy your search and don't forget that where you walk others have already tread, so respect the desert and those that proceeded you. P.S. Refer to photos for orientation.
