Geocache Description:

CACHE IS NOT AT THE LISTED COORDINATES BUT IS NEAR BY.

The cache is between double drawbridges and double benchmarks.

The two drawbridges are the Miller-Sweeney Bridge and the Fruitvale Avenue Railroad Bridge. They cross the Oakland Estuary and connect Alemeda Island to Oakland. The original bridge was built at this location in 1894. It was manually operated and electrified in 1911. Originally it was used only for trains but cars soon became the main mode of traffic and the tracks were removed in 1951. The Miller-Sweeney Bridge was built in 1973 It is a four lane single leaf bascule bridge. It handles about 28,000 cars each day. It only takes 66 seconds to raise the bridge fully open to 79 degrees using two 75 HP electric motors.

Next to it is the Fruitvale Avenue Railroad Bridge. It is a twin tower verticle lift bridge. It was built in 1951 and is for trains only. It is powered by four 19 HP electric motors. Each tower has a massive counterweight to help lift the bridge.

Near by there are two benchmarks located within 24 inches of each other. There is another marker nearby but it is not listed as a benchmark.

To find the cache, first locate the double benchmarks. Then take a bearing on the South tower of the Fruitvale Avenue Railroad Bridge from the double benchmarks. Project a waypoint 120 feet along that bearing. Cache is a magnetic keyholder.
