Sun Nana Shi Nana Ichi Zero Zero, Ichi Ni Ni Ni Go Nana Nana Hachi

At one time, San Francisco's Japantown was one of the largest communities of Japanese outside of Japan. With the advent of World War II and the forced internment of those of Japanese ancestry, the once thriving ethnic neighborhood, has been reduced to a small district, centered on a non-descript shopping mall. Only three Japantown’s remain in the United States.

Immediately surrounding the mall are a number of shops and restaurants catering to the Japanese styles and tastes. The coordinates listed will take you to one of two bronze fountains created by Ruth Asawa, in a small plaza across from Japan Center (the cache is not here).

Nihonmachi Peace Pagoda

The Peace Plaza, found between Miyako Mall and Kintetsu Mall, is overshadowed by a large 5-tiered pagoda built in 1968. Surrounding the pagoda are stone benches that provide a convenient meeting place or Geocache starting point.

Parking is available, for a reasonable price, in the public garage underneath the shopping mall. Entrances can be found on Geary between Laguna & Webster, Filmore between Geary & Post, and Post between Webster & Laguna. There are metered parking spaces within feet of the cache, if your real lucky to get one.

Visit Japantown's own web site.

The cache is a non-magnetic candy tin, painted black, with a grasping device attached, just large enough for a log and very small Geoswag. Best to bring your own writing device.

A year later, and I've returned with the numbers in English. Maybe it would have been quicker if I went inside and bought a Japanese number calculator? Instead, I thumbed through my books on Japanese bonsai, and woodblock printing, and raku ceramics, and katana swords, and sushi. TFTC. It's a nice place, and it was good to make the return trip. Cache in good shape.

Yet another we found on our trip to downtown SF for the day with Gitonyerhorse, DragonsWest and GoGoJo. Pretty easy brushup on my kanji for this one, several groups of muggles hanging about AND we searched the area where the cache was for a while, but I think the hint tripped us up more than helped. Thought maybe a couple people were standing near the cache, but when we came back a few minutes later Gitonyerhorse homed in on it pretty quick.

Nice area down here and the little malls around it are reminiscent of Japan, though there were far less people here than we had in Tokyo. You do get a good feel for what to expect in Japanese malls & eating establishments, minus the group of kids burning a doobie close to ground zero. While quasi-legal here, if they catch you with that in Japan you can expect to spend a week or so in jail... pretty harsh punishment over there.

TFTC!

Found this with Gitonyerhorse, Gogojo & Azayzel. Gitonyerhorse saved the day after her appointment at the medical center. My, what sharp eyes you have! The group, sans Gitonyerhorse, tried before we had to run back and retrieve her and continue on our merry tour of the city. Thanks for placing this cache!

In the city with Forman attending a Gowala event and deceide we wanted to stop in Japan Town for dessert crepes. Grabbed this on the way in. Very clever. TFTC!

Nice quick find, and NO ONE was around. My two years of Japanese in college finally paid off for something! TFTC!
