Halton Hills Trail Math Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

res2100: I went to visit a number of my caches today and I am disappointed to say that the cache has been trashed by the new construction going on. Most of the forest is gone now. Houses are going up fast. I found the container open and filled with mud. Emptied out the mud and took the container, log and trade items home. There was no other suitable place here for a replacement, so it's time to say goodbye to this old favourite.

Thanks to all who found this cache.

Geocache Description:

Cache container is a fairly large white bucket. This should make for an enjoyable hike
at about 1.5 - 2 km in total.

Located in Glen Williams along a Halton Hills Trail, which I believe used to be an old rail line. I discovered this trail while driving by a couple weeks ago and took the time today to check it out and hopefully bring others to this trail too.

The above coordinates are for the entrance of the trail where you should start your journey. You will need to visit 2 other physical caches and 1 virtual location along the trail before finding the final cache.

Location 1:
Loose Change (GCE43B) - Note the 3 letters on the inside of the lid of the cache container.

Location 2:
A Tree With A View (GCE43F) - Note the name written on the inside of the cache lid. It is the name of a food company (5 letters).

Location 3:
N 43° 39.553 W 079° 55.367 (revised coords) - There is a 5ft high metal pole with a small blue metal box on top, with blue lettering. Note the word that appears twice on this box.

Fill in the blanks below to get you to the final coordinates of the cache. Use the information below to fill in the blanks.

N 43° ___ ___.___ ___ ___
A B C D E

W 79° ___ ___.___ ___ ___
F G H I J

Determine which numbers (from the chart below) correspond to the letters from location 1 above. This will be represented by Y in the following formula. Determine which numbers (from the chart below) correspond to the letters from location 3 above. This will be represented by Z in the following formula. Substitute Y and Z for the 2 numbers you just calculated and figure out the answer to the following formula [(Y x Z x 2 + 505) / 1000 = AB.CDE] to get the digits for A, B, C, D and E for the final North coordinates.

(___ x ___ x 2 + 505) / 1000 = AB.CDE
Y Z

Determine which numbers (from the chart below) correspond to the letters from location 2 above. These will give you the digits for F, G, H, I and J for the final West coordinates.

As a final check to make sure you got the final coordinates right, if you add the last digit of each coordinate (i.e., E + J), you should get the number 8.

0 = G,J,Q
1 = T,V
2 = C,F,W
3 = A,M
4 = O,S
5 = B,K,R
6 = H,L,X
7 = D,E,U
8 = I,Z
9 = N,P,Y

Ok, I hope this wasn't too confusing, but if we are all smart enough to use a GPS, I would think we could all do some simple math. Atleast I didn't ask you to take the square root of something.

There are a couple of benches along the way to rest and make sure you take the time to enjoy the view from the large field of mounds...it's very nice and it is on the way (between location 2 and 3). Final cache is just past location 3, along the same trail. I hope you enjoy finding this cache and the area, as much as we did.
