Mineral Refinery Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

hidegoseek: It's been a year since anyone has attempted this cache, and after yesterday's DNF log I thought I'd check on it. Unfortunately, as I approached GZ I saw that the original hiding spot was pretty much decimated. I poked around the general area hoping that the cache had somehow migrated to a new spot, but after 20 minutes I gave up and decided to bid this cache adieu.

Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the above coordinates.

I came across this structure several months ago and wondered what it was.  Several long-time Humboldt residents thought that it was part of an old foundry, and fellow cacher Nylimb forwarded some research that indicates it might be part of a mineral refining plant, circa 1950’s.

An article in the Arcata Union newspaper described plans for a Mineral Refinery costing close to $500,000, with an expected payroll of 3,000 employees.  Dr. C. Charles Celestri emphasized that the plant was not going to be a mineral refinery in the accepted sense of the word, but rather a process that “revolves around the making of milk of magnesia from sea water and employing it chemically to extract mineral from ore.  Included in minerals produced will be ‘H’ iron, a pure form of iron used in steel manufacture, vital metals used by the government in atomic work, cobalt, nickel and other metals.”  He told the editor of the Arcata Union that the ore will come from the Hoopa area.

Knowledge of the following elements will lead you to the cache:
Zirconium, Tin, Fluorine, Strontium
Magnesium, Beryllium, Neon, Calcium, Boron

It’s about a 0.4-mile walk to the cache site on well-established trails.  Please, no bushwhacking or intruding on private property.
