Geocache Description:

A math puzzle about a boy, a ball and a homerun.

I took my son out to play ball today over at Ferullo Field. He was standing at home plate when I sent a slider over the plate. Strike One! Next came my curve ball. Strike Two! It was tough because he is a lefty and I am a righty. Now he was getting mad and said that the next one he was going to hit out of the park. Bring on the heat he said. Well, I mustered up all I could and sent a fast ball right down the center at him hoping to catch him looking...

BAM! Going, going, gone!

Just as he said, he pulled the ball and it went over the fence and almost landed in the Middlesex canal. Short Man sure can hit a ball far. If he had hit it to center field it would have landed just 15 feet outside the fence. Fortunately for him he hit it to where the fence is less than 350 feet from home base. Where the ball landed we decided to place a Geocache. Good thing we had one in the car ready to go.

The location of this cache is along the Middlesex canal. The 27 mile long Middlesex Canal connected Boston to the Merrimack River at Lowell. Freight and passengers were carried up and down the canal from 1803 to 1853 when it was superseded by the Boston & Lowell Railroad. The canal played an important role in the development of the region north of Boston as far as Concord, New Hampshire. There is an interesting article on the canal at http://www.winchestermass.org/globecanal.html This stretch of the canal runs between Alfred Street near the Baldwin mansion up to School Street behind Ferullo Park.

To find this cache you will need to go to home plate at Ferullo Field and project a waypoint equal to the greatest distance a ball can be hit inside the fence and add 15 feet. (XXX feet) The direction that he hit the ball was 71.7 degrees off of one of the baselines. (Remember he pulled the ball.) If this math is too much for a simple story, then read the story again and try it from the clues. (Let us know how you found it.)
