Clutha Mouth (Otago) Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

U.N.C.L.E.: Finally managed to get to the cache to check it and, sure enough, it's gone. Definitely not in the cavity where I hid it. I had a good look around and added to the hour that Onslow Fisherman (x2) spent searching recently, I'd say it's been muggled. How on Earth do people find these things in such remote locations? Collected the waypoint on the way home and am archiving the cache. Both waypoint and final areas now available for new caches.

Geocache Description:

A straightforward multicache that will take you first to a place of historical interest and then to the mouth of the Clutha River nearby.

At the published co-ords you will find the co-ords for the final cache. The final is approximately 4.4km from the waypoint. To get to the final you will need to make your way to a track that starts at S46 19.324 E169 49.316. There is a small car park and an information board here. The final is 1.45km (as the crow flies) from the start of the track. The track is dead flat and well surfaced. Bicycles are allowed so you could ride the track (three stiles to lift your bike over). Don't be tempted to drive the road that runs parallel to the track as it is private.

The final is a black painted 2 litre snaplock that is not visible from any distance.

Beware of muggles at the waypoint. Several houses look onto the location so stealth may be required.

Notes:

Waypoint-Coal was first discovered in Kaitangata as early as 1844. At 9am on 21 February 1879 there was a massive explosion in the Castle Hill mine at Kaitangata. 34 miners were killed. The subsequent enquiry found that extremely haphazard practices had existed at the mine and that the probable cause of the explosion was a combination of inadequate ventilation in the mine and the use of naked lights (candles) which had ignited a build-up of gases.

Final- Just east of Balclutha the Clutha River divides into two branches for its final few kilometres to the sea. These are the Matau and Koau branches. Sitting between the branches, effectively an island in the river, is Inch Clutha. The area is low-lying and prone to flooding. Extensive work has been done to protect the area from the Clutha. The information board at the start of the track details much of this.
